Joining Maghrib Late | Ask Madina

Answered and approved by Madina Faculty members

Question:

AsSalaamu Alaykum. If I join a Jamaah performing Maghrib, and I join in the last rakah, do I do tahiyat-jalsa in my second rakah?

By second rakah, I mean the first rakah I perform on my own, after the Imaan has made salaam.

Answer:

Thank you for your question.

You are to follow the Imam, and by this I mean: you read tahiyaat with the Imam and the jama’ah.

When he does tasleem (i.e., the imam finishes the prayer by saying, “al-salaamu alaykum), you do not say it, rather you rise and perform another two units of prayer and you would, again, thereafter, read the tahiyaat at the end, send salaat on the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa alihi), make dua, and then finish the prayer by saying tasleem.

And Allah knows best!
